Sullivan started singing in the school's chorus in the contralto position, and then she joined the adult choir just a couple of years further on. Sullivan received little exposure to secular music. She recalls that she was just 11 years old when a person requested her to sing in a solo in church. She wasn't enough yet to be ready. "Then when McDonald's was hosting a competition for students in big cities, I got a chance to sing 'Accept What God Wills' on Showtime in the Apollo and the audience responded really well". She performed with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday in the year 13. Sullivan signed her first contract with Jive Records when she was fifteen. The label recorded her an entire album, but the album never came out. Sullivan was then dismissed by the label. Missy Elliott was the producer for some tracks that were on the album she released as her first. Of these "Backstabbers" composed by Timbaland and Timbaland, which Elliott created was one of Sullivan's top tracks.
